Science and Music expedition in Cancun
Ocean World of Sound is centered in the Mexican Caribbean, and we had very productive site visits in the Marine Protected Areas around Cancun earlier this month. Highlights included a concert on the catamaran Beluga, with live cello and live underwater sounds, and scouting for two new research sites in collaboration with the National Parks office. We are now working to establish research projects in Chitales, a shallow reef area in Parque Cancun that experienced inundation by sand and is beginning to undergo restoration efforts, and Cuevones, a deeper site that was closed to recreational activities and appears to be slowly recovering. Tracking these sites long term will help the resource managers assess how restoration and recovery is going over time, as well as detect indicator and endangered species, and assess daily, lunar, and seasonal patterns.
We are always looking to expand our network of listening stations. Please get in touch if you’re interested in getting involved, and if you know of any groups who might be interested in sponsoring a listening station please let us know!
